Modes of dissemination; their spread in the body and the effects they produce (fever, toxaemia, septicaemia, pyaemia local lesions, eg., abscess). General and specific immunity of the body to infection. Antisera and vaccines.
ASEPSIS.
General principles. Surgical cleanliness. Sterili- sation by heat, by antiseptics.
OPERATING THEATRE.
Preparation of patient. Preparation of opera- tion area. Lighting, Heating, Ventilation. Equip- ment. Anaesthesia. Preparation for operations in private houses.

COMMON SURGICAL DISEASES AND OPERATIONS.
